Sound
This is one of the sound effects that we will use in the opening sequence not only to emphasize the sound of the keyboard to show that the characters are isolated and alone but also for when the titles come across the screen we could also have a typing sound along with a typing animation to go with.
This sound or something else like this sound which is more modern to again emphasize that the characters are alone and there is a heavy influence of technology will be used with the shot of the computer being turned on within the opening sequence and the rest of the film. I want to use this too because it gives a sense that these machines are more powerful than you expect them to be used for, this is why i want to have this sound quite loud in volume.
we have chosen this music as it has a sense of mystery and intrigue as it starts quite in volume at the beginning but also gives the feeling of calm and relaxation. I want this because it will make the scene very juxtaposed because of these innocent looking teenagers in the innocent looking locations with the innocent start to the music makes the whole thing feel innocent until we find out what they are doing and then the music drops and becomes very fast along with what they are doing.

Locations
![]() |
| This is a great location for the Sci-Fi part of the Thriller. For example in our film there is a lot of computer based action, and it needs a typical "high tech" set up to show this. |

Conventions of a Sci-Fi
Conventions of a Sci-Fi
You can see from the trailer to Alien that there is a small group of people who are troubled by the Alien that exists and the people create an uprising and fight back.
Another is commonly used props which in a sci fi genre would be things like computers and technology and is usually futuristic or things that aren't realistically possible. Within the Alien trailer you can see that they are on a space ship, they sleep in futuristic looking pods and there is a lot of technology shown like androids and things that are quite unrealistic.
the mise en scene is quite conventional where scenes use low key lighting and dark clothing with a lot of shadows cast this is also shown in the Alien trailer with a lot of dark and low key lighting in a majority of the scenes.
The sound would be things like low pitch long dragged out notes giving an eerie feeling also by using a lot of eerie sounds. In this trailer of Alien, high pitched notes were used to give this eerie but fast paced action sci-fi thriller feel to the trailer drawing in many different types of audiences whilst also keeping to convention of a sci-fi

Enemy of the State
Enemy of the State
(Scott, 1998,UK)
Cinematography
The opening sequence uses some imagery of CCTV cameras and a lot of shots which are in birds eye view making it seem like someone is spying on the people in the street from some sort of sattelite spying on people which gives the impression this film will be about hackers or some instance government spying agencies like the CIA or the FBI.
There is a lot of this imagery of cameras and close ups and sped up shots of cameras as well as a lot of police footage and real life looking footage of police gun fights and car chases which gives the impression that this film is about the government and spying as well as the use of cameras and heavily influenced by technology.
Mise-En-Scene
The mise-en-scene for this film is very government and is heavily influenced by the police and cameras as well as spying and modern technology by using what seems like real life footage of police chases and CCTV cameras watching people as well as using a few birds eye shots and putting a tracking view finder over the shot to make it seem like someone is watching through a camera on a sattelite makes the audience feel quite un-easy as it could make them feel like they are being watched.
Editing
The editing for this opening sequence is very fast paced quickly cutting through each of the shots of real footage they have used to make things seem very fast paced and makes the film feel like a fast action film with a lot of fighting. This will be used to make the audience un-easy as they wont know what they are looking at as it goes by so quickly. This creates the atmosphere of a professional spying is quick and makes things feel fast paced and adrenaline fueled.
Sound
The music that accompanies the opening sequence is quite fast in tempo which syncs in with the editing, fast pace, this makes things seem very fast and action like. The music is also very loud in volume and has very low pitch notes dragged out through the opening sequence making things seem not so action like but more mysterious and makes the film feel more like a film about spies than the fast paced action that we originally thought it would have been.
The Matrix
The Matrix
(Wachowski,1999,UK)
Cinematography
The first shot is of a computer screen and it is completely still as if we are a person looking at the screen and just watching what the screen does, as it dials up and does its thing.
Until we slowly start tracking in towards the numbers giving the effect that we are going to go inside this screen to see what is on the other side. This makes the audience feel uneasy as it it something strange that is happening as this could never happen at anytime in the real world and it gives a sense of fantasy and sci fi and it does this by doing weird things with the technology we have today.
Mise-En-Scene
The mise-en-scene is quite dark for this film as there are a lot of abandoned buildings used and the world as 'we' know it or as they know it as 'The Matrix' seems very dystopian and uses very monochromatic colors things inside buildings seem dirty and dusty. But the woman from outside the matrix is dressed in all black shiny Lycra suit which makes her stand out against everyone else in the scene namely the police and her surroundings.

Sound
Through the distributors logo and the producers logo and right through to when the scene starts there is music being played which is quite loud in volume and uses long dragged out notes making things feel very uneasy and very long. then the music picks up pace and becomes more dramatic and epic with high volume notes then lower volume notes at different pitches being played which gives the feeling of mysterious and makes it feel futuristic and sci fi.
Editing
The editing is quite slow as the beginning is one long shot lasting for about 15 seconds until it comes to the second shot which is in real life but through the first shot it uses many transitions to keep the shot flowing completely in one shot. and from then the editing is quite slow paced until the inevitable action shots some of which are slow motion so that makes the editing sporadically edited in some places.

Romantic Comedy
Bridget Jones Diary
(Maguire,2001,UK)
Cinematography
At the beginning of the clip there is a close up of the main character which then tracks to follow her highlighting her as the focus point for the audience which also highlights her as the main character. This is also done in a close up to emphasize the fact that she is alone and quite isolated as you don't see the other characters full bodies as either she is in the way or they are cut out of the shot as shown in the gif image below.
Mise-En-Scene
The main character in this scene is wearing red pajamas to show the fact that it is Christmas and to also show the fact that she is looking for love as well as these clothes are quite baggy shows that she really doesn't care about her appearance as she knows that there is nobody else there reinforcing the fact she is isolated and alone.
Editing
There are some shots which use a fade into another shot which is used to show the slow pacing of the film as well as to show the passing of time and usually to show that there has been a change of scene the rest of the editing in the film are normal cuts between characters in conversations and things haooening in the film.. This is shown in the screen shot below.
Sound
As the clip starts there is nothing but non diegetic sound until dialogue happens and the main character speaks which is over the music which puts across the feeling of isolation as she is heard over the music meaning a lot of the people are being quiet or just aren't near her or listening to her. and then after this scene there is nothing but non-diegetic sound as she narrates across the scenes making a sound bridge which helps the scenes flow between each other and then it is just the score being played at a loud volume as it works with what is happening on screen as the main character lip sings the song.

Wallander
Wallander
Firewall, 7th December 2008, BBC1
In this opening sequence all the way through a lot of things are shown which makes the audience ask questions about what is going and who the characters are and what exactly has happened and where they are.
Cinematography
In this first shot we have an extreme shot which is also an establishing shot for where the next few shots will be based on this costal part of a country and off in the distance we can see a small white car. This instantly makes the audience start to think of where this could be; what could have happened; why it has happened and who has done it. As the shot helicopters over we see two characters walking away from the car before we cut to this shot below of a two shot of both the characters.
Mies-En-Scene
Looking at the back of both the characters hair we can see that the left character is not as powerful or significant as the character on the right as the character on the right is taller in the frame and has all of these other things about her characters costume as the character on the left seems very plain and normal with normal brown hair and a black hoody.
Editing
Sound
In the intro scene the sounds are very non-diegetic at first before the first cut happens as there is a volume increase in the music that is being played, along with the surrounding ambiance of the wind and the sea, which is also a build up to the cut and when the cut happens everything becomes diegetic with the sound of the two female characters walking and the surrounding ambient sounds. but there is nothing that is non-diegetic until the point of when the female character drops the knife. This is done to give a sense of isolation, that these characters are the only people around which is also shown with their hyperbolic breathing sounds.

differences of a trailer and an opening sequence to a film.
There are many differences between a trailer and the opening of a film. A trailer is made up of many different parts of the movie usually showing some of the story-line and some of the best parts of the movie to entice a certain audience into watching the film. A trailer always begins with the production company and any other companies who took part in the making of the film like Dreamworks for example. So a trailers main purpose is to entice its audience and give away some parts of the story-line even sometimes telling a part of the story to make people want to see the film. you can see all of this in the trailer below.
But in the opening of a film we will either have the title of the film show up or a sequence leading up to the title of the film and we usuall have close ups of the main characters with in the film and the film starts to tell the story and sets the scene of what time period the film is in, what kind of society the films characters live in to captivate the audience into watching on as you can see in the opening sequence to V For Vendetta below.

The Preliminary task
WWW: The shots flowed together well and there wasn't many continuity errors.
WWW: We adhered to the 180 degree rule through all of the filming including the over the shoulder shots.
EBI: The close up of Kierans face could have been shot in the right place as you can see that it is not the same door but still works.
EBI: a bit of the sound could be fixed with the shot of Kieran walking into the room where i had to cut sound from the shot and replace the door bang sound because there was some unwanted noise in the shot.
