The Matrix

The Matrix
(Wachowski,1999,UK)
Cinematography

The first shot is of a computer screen and it is completely still as if we are a person looking at the screen and just watching what the screen does, as it dials up and does its thing. Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Until we slowly start tracking in towards the numbers giving the effect that we are going to go inside this screen to see what is on the other side. This makes the audience feel uneasy as it it something strange that is happening as this could never happen at anytime in the real world and it gives a sense of fantasy and sci fi and it does this by doing weird things with the technology we have today. Mise-En-Scene

The mise-en-scene is quite dark for this film as there are a lot of abandoned buildings used and the world as 'we' know it or as they know it as 'The Matrix' seems very dystopian and uses very monochromatic colors things inside buildings seem dirty and dusty. But the woman from outside the matrix is dressed in all black shiny Lycra suit which makes her stand out against everyone else in the scene namely the police and her surroundings.

Sound
Through the distributors logo and the producers logo and right through to when the scene starts there is music being played which is quite loud in volume and uses long dragged out notes making things feel very uneasy and very long. then the music picks up pace and becomes more dramatic and epic with high volume notes then lower volume notes at different pitches being played which gives the feeling of mysterious and makes it feel futuristic and sci fi.

Editing
The editing is quite slow as the beginning is one long shot lasting for about 15 seconds until it comes to the second shot which is in real life but through the first shot it uses many transitions to keep the shot flowing completely in one shot. and from then the editing is quite slow paced until the inevitable action shots some of which are slow motion so that makes the editing sporadically edited in some places.
